Gay Icon Project
[edit]In my effort to merge the now-deleted list from the article Gay icon to the Gay icons category, I have added this page to the category. I engaged in this effort as a "human script", adding everyone from the list to the category, bypassing the fact-checking stage. That is what I am relying on you to do. Please check the article Gay icon and make a judgment as to whether this person or group fits the category. By distributing this task from the regular editors of one article to the regular editors of several articles, I believe that the task of fact-checking this information can be expedited. Thank you very much. Philwelch 21:41, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I plan on conducting research on Penny Marshall and adding to this existing article. I have found some sources, cited below, that I will use in my writing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Samifeller (talk • contribs) 18:47, 5 March 2018 (UTC)
As far as Penny Marshall's existing article, I plan on adding extensively to her background. Her background growing up and her relationships with her family members and her significant others played a big role in the establishment and progression of her career and I don't think the existing article emphasizes or provides enough information on it. The article makes mention of some of her family members including her father, brother, and sister, but it does not explain the nature of their relationships and the affect it had on her future career. Also, the only mention of her mother is just that her birth name was given to her after her mother's favorite actress, but no information on how her mother influenced her career. As far as the section of the article about her career, I want to organize each film, television show, and project that she worked on, acted in, wrote, or directed. There is already a list established of films she acted in, directed, produced and television shows she acted in, directed, and produced, but the section itself that describes some of her projects that is unclear. There are also only a few projects highlighted from her extensive career. I understand that it is not necessary to summarize each and every project she ever took part in, but I want to highlight her most important projects in more detail. Even her most famous films such as A League of Their Own, Big, Awakenings, and Riding in Cars with Boys, do not have any type of synopsis or background in the article. I want to organize this section and add more detail.
"Penny Marshall." Biography, vol. 6, no. 9, Sept. 2002, p. 112. EBSCOhost
This source provides insight on Penny Marshall's background and how her career progressed. This biography discusses how her parents, respectively a filmmaker and a dance instructor, influenced her endeavors growing up and how her brother gave her her first big break as a writer and how she married Rob Reiner who also worked as a professional in the film industry.
Sidewater, Nancy. "Penny Marshall." Entertainment Weekly, no. 761, 23 Apr. 2004, p. 64. EBSCOhost
This source provides first hand insight from Penny Marshall and her experience on set making the film A League of their Own. She describes the hardships she faced and how her actresses looked beat up, but she ended up being successful.
"Penny Marshall Biography." Biography.com, 3 Apr. 2014, www.biography.com/people/penny-marshall-9542495.
This source provides a good synopsis of Marshall's early life and background, and then it provides insight into her early TV acting roles that lead into her eventual career as a director. After going through her various acting roles, there is a section that tells of her career as a director, going through her different films and providing information on each and talks about the success and impact it had. This source is reliable as I came across it through a search in the Academic Search Complete database.
Kalogerakis, George, and Lorenzo Benet. "Penny Marshall." People., vol. 24, no. 26, 23 Dec. 1996, p. 105., Penny Marshall.
This source provides insight into Penny Marshall's persona. It offers imagery of what she looks like, what she is wearing, what her schedule for the day is, and quotes from her as she goes about her day. The article mentions and quotes Marshall's sister, who also is in the media business and works as a TV producer, providing insight on her upbringings and family life. It tells about a day in her life, but then provides the bigger picture of her role in Hollywood. This source is dependable because I came across is through a search in the Academic Search Complete library database.
Brissey, Breia. "Take Us Back to The Ball Game." Entertainment Weekly, no. 1228/1229, 12 Oct. 2012, pp. 88-89. EBSCOhost, Penny Marshall.
This source gives background information on Marshall's film A League of Their Own and provides and interview with Marshall 20 years after the films release providing her interpretation and insight as she looks back on the film. This source is reliable because I came across is through a search in the Academic Search Complete library database. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Samifeller (talk • contribs) 18:45, 5 March 2018 (UTC)

So soon?
[edit]There seems to be vandalism already about the cause of Marshall's death, but I can't seem to edit the page (I presume because it's semi-protected). I'm very inexperienced at editing articles, but "diabetus" should be changed to "diabetes". Maybe it was someone's typo, but I somehow doubt it. Mushika Vahana (talk) 20:07, 18 December 2018 (UTC)

Photograph
[edit]This article's subject photograph shows Marshall as the character Laverne, from Laverne and Shirley. An accurate representation of the subject is important. Mary Tyler Moore or Henry Winkler, for instance, are shown as themselves and not their most well-known acting roles. I don't know the protocol of using pictures from Flickr, but this is a good candidate.

- It doesn't look like that photo meets the Flickr license needed for Wiki.Nohomersryan (talk) 08:19, 19 December 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for pointing that out - Ill be on the lookout for one that meets the Flickr use standards. Mapping Data (talk) 00:54, 20 December 2018 (UTC)
- Found this picture of Marshall the person in Commons. I'll give it a day before subbing it in. Mapping Data (talk) 03:55, 20 December 2018 (UTC)
- @Mapping Data: That picture is TERRIBLE and would never be used in any respectable encyclopedia. See MOS:LEADIMAGE (they should not only illustrate the topic specifically, but also be the type of image used for similar purposes in high-quality reference works, and therefore what our readers will expect to see) and MOS:LEAD (As with all images, but particularly the lead, the image used should be relevant and technically well-produced). The lead infobox article should be the highest quality, most representative photo available, even if that means one that is not the most recent. Marshall was well known for her role in Laverne & Shirley, and it's not like she's unrecognizable in the photo. --Animalparty! (talk) 06:28, 20 December 2018 (UTC)

She was born in Manhattan, not The Bronx
[edit]This according to her birth records:
https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/61457/images/47769_b353834-00586
Name: Carole Marshall
Birth Date: 15 Oct 1943
Birth Place: Manhattan, New York City, New York, USA
Certificate Number: 34382
Many reference sources list The Bronx as her place of birth, but the birth records are unimpeachable.
IMDb also says she was born in Manhttan:

Television credits
[edit]I remember no details, but she appeared as herself on an episode of Seinfeld. As I recall, George was trying to lease an apartment in a snobby building, who it turned out, even rejected Penny Marshall. 74.40.116.36 (talk) 23:04, 9 April 2023 (UTC)
Marshall and Williams photo
[edit]A huge number of people, 16%, have difficulty in life because they have trouble recognizing faces. The photo[1] of Williams and Marshall is a canonical example. I have utterly no idea of which is which. A careful examination leads me to think Marshall in on the right so I labeled it thus. Will some editor who knows please make sure it is correctly labeled? Thank you, Nick Beeson (talk) 15:04, 1 October 2024 (UTC)
