Scouting Project and IP

[edit]

Mike: you've been showing up all day as your IP, not your user name. You have good contributions to Scouting, and you may be interested in joining our budding project at: User_talk:Gadget850/BSA_article_improvements; if so, please add yourself to the table in the "interested wikipedians" section. Rlevse 20:10, 18 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks!

[edit]

Just tipping my hat to you for your contributions to All-American Publications! It's always so great to start a needed page, and then see other people contributing to it. So cool! (You even prompted me to check something that revealed a chronological error I'd made. All to the good!) — Tenebrae 06:34, 6 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Project on American Indians

[edit]

Hi! As you are interested in the tribal articles, take a look at Wikipedia:WikiProject Indigenous peoples of North America. It's a young project, but very active. I've been trying to add to the articles on the pre-Seminole tribes in Florida, and most recently, on pre-Seminole archaeological sites in Florida. There is a lot to do, as you can see. -- Donald Albury(Talk) 23:37, 16 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Scouting caps

[edit]

Before we get into an edit war on caps, please take a look at The Language of Scouting (LoS) and look at the entry capitalization under Scouting Terms and Style. The LoS is the official BSA useage, and we are trying to be consistent on this.

On merit badges, we were both incorrect:

merit badge: ... Capitalize the name but not the words "merit badge." Example: "earn the Lifesaving and Swimming merit badges."
So, it should be Camping merit badge.

YIS, --Gadget850 ( Ed) 20:07, 17 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

PS: Not all Scouting literature conforms to the LoS useage, but it is the standard. --Gadget850 ( Ed) 20:12, 17 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I have read the LOS, which is why I didn't go back and change anything. I just don't agree with their cap rules. For instance, to me it should be Junior Assistant Scoutmaster, not junior assistant Scoutmaster, etc. --Emb021 20:13, 17 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, we need to conform to some sort of standard. Until the project came along, this was all over the place. This use also conforms to the Wikipedia:Manual of Style (capital letters). I know I can get a bit pendantic on stuff like this, but I am a tech writer! I know some of the writing rules can see odd, but they are usually arrived at by consensus after many long discussions. As another example, take a look at the Army Times: they use the civilian abbreviations for ranks standardized by the newspaper industy instead of the US Army abbreviations. --Gadget850 ( Ed) 20:23, 17 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've got to go with Emb021 on this one. "Patrol Leader", "Junior Assistant Scoutmaster", and all unit jobs (youth or adult) are titles of specific jobs and as such should be capitalized. Not capitalizing them makes it look like a generic phrase; it's like not capitalizing Systems Engineer on a business card. I know it says otherwise in the LOS and the Scout handbook has them lowercase, but I have always disagreed with it. On the other hand, I do agree with Ed that we need to be consistent throught the Scouting articles. Rlevse 21:42, 17 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Systems Engineer would be capitalized in that case, since it applies to a specific person: see Wikipedia:Manual of Style (capital letters). Where do we want to go with this? --Gadget850 ( Ed) 16:29, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Editing

[edit]

BTW: We were both adding the same info (Brownsea etc.) to the Boy Scouts (Boy Scouts of America) article at the same time. When I tried to save, I got the edit conflict message and simply pasted my edits back in until I could see what had been added. Weird how that happened.

FWIW, I've been in Scouting since 1969 and Venturing since 1999. Doc Miller's office is about 10 minutes from here: he was my Wood Badge counselor. Seems like we have a lot of the same interests. I've seen your web site, and indeed have referenced it several times, before I knew that was you. It does have a bit of a bandwith cap, so I can only get so many looks before it closes. --Gadget850 ( Ed) 21:18, 17 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Scout BSA

[edit]

I noted on your website the dark green Scout BSA strip for the Leadership Corpshttp://www.geocities.com/yosemite/falls/8826/pics/scoutbsagreenshirt.jpg]. I have one of these in the light green. I was in the Leadership Corps in 1975-76 or so, and may have been given the strip then, but never put it on my uniform. We never wore the forest green shirt. --Gadget850 ( Ed) 20:28, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I just want to thank you for making that photo work on Steve Fossett. I uploaded the photo and then could not complete the whole thing. I can't thank you enough! PowersPhotos.

Sorry, didn't do anything. Was just adding Fossett to the Silver Buffalo category. --Emb021 20:48, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Scouting article work

[edit]

If you are getting this, it is because you do or did work on Scouting articles (see Wikipedia:WikiProject_Scouting#Participants_and_primary_areas_of_interest).

As the Scouting WikiProject has been formed since early January 2006, we've had many great improvements made in this area of Wiki and I want to personally thank everyone for their help. We don't always agree on things, but we keep moving forward. YIS, Rlevse 22:09, 25 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Blocked?!?

[edit]

"Autoblocked because your IP address has been recently used by "Metavandal". The reason given for Metavandal's block is: "user..."."

Some user named Curps has blocked me because he has blocked the IP I come in from (129.188.33.221), which is a proxy IP. Ridicious!

Unblocked, sorry about that, none of us sysops have any way of knowing if the user is coming from a proxy (I assume AOL) or not, as we don't have IP addresses for usernames. Anyways, you should be able to edit now -- Tawker 18:31, 2 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ace Books

[edit]

Hi -- I noticed you're making some improvements to some of the paperback publishing stubs. Glad to see it. One I've spent quite a bit of time on is Ace Books, and I wondered if there was anything you could do to improve the article. I asked for a peer review on it and one thing that was suggested was to get more background information on the success of the company financially over the years. Currently there is very little about the success of the line since the 1970s. Anyway, anything you can do would be much appreciated; and if not, I'm glad to see your improvements to Popular and Dell and so on.

The Indigenous Peoples of North America Portal has been established, as a starting point for those wishing to learn more about the subject, with information and links on a wide variety of issues. It also contains news regarding the continent's various tribes and nations. It's a graphically pleasing site, and everyone is encouraged to check it out.
The project's home page has a new design, featuring tabbed subpages on participants, templates, articles, categories, and the to do list.
The Article Classification lists have been moved to their own subpage due to size. This is a sign of progress in the ongoing work of this project.
The project's talk page template has been updated, along with the classification system, to include the assessment on the talk pages of the articles that have been classified and assessed.
Balance
As the Project reaches its first six months of activity, the great effort all of you have invested in it has turned the vast information available on Indigenous North American topics from a deorganized cumulous into an excellent and easy to consult database. Although much work is still in order, few WikiProjects are able to obtain the amazing results we are proud to show today. To all of you, thank you and congratulations!
The assessment of articles within the scope of the project is still an ongoing process. We need people to help in this who are not contributors to the articles they are assessing. Also, there is the ongoing need for identifying and cataloguing articles that fall within the scope of this project. As of today, nearly 1,500 have been identified within the Project's scope.

Valérian: Spatio-Temporal Agent

[edit]

Hi Michael, thanks for coming back about your additions to the Valérian article. I note that you state that you don't have a cite for Fantasy Flight's intentions to print two further titles in the series but you also state that you have been keeping a list of European comics for which English translations have been made or scheduled. Presumably this information came from somewhere - either a press release from the company or a trade publication? Is it just the case that you never kept track of where you picked up the info in the first place? Given that the other editors on the article are keen to put it up for WP:GA, we're a bit sensitive about contributors adding uncited material at the moment. I would propose to keep the line with the {{fact}} tag on the article until the GA nomination is initiated - if either you (or another editor - I'll do some research myself) can find a cite then well and good, if not I think we'll park the line on the talk page until someone can come up with a suitable cite. I'll also copy our discussion onto the main article talk page for the other editors to see. I hope you understand - by the way, the other changes you made to the article were very useful. Sea Scouting (Boy Scouts of America)

[edit]

I added images for ranks, positions and other awards for Sea Scouting (Boy Scouts of America). I am not a Sea Scouting expert, so I would appreciate a review to ensure I have the images labeled correctly and that I am not missing anything. Now that we have images, we should be able to cut a lot of the descriptive verbiage. --Gadget850 ( Ed) 15:30, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Michael, are you certain? I've seen many references to the "Johnston Historical Museum" being located in New Brunswick at the national office and NOT at Schiff. Just seeking clarification since I only visited what used to be Schiff once in 1995. --Jdurbach 17:55, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of The Objectivist Forum

[edit]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article The Objectivist Forum, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

Appears to lack sufficient notability to justify its own article. Maybe roll into a section on magazines/newsletters published by Rand?

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the Proposed Deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. Hello Emb021! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 697 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag.
