I moved this comment here from the article page.

The American Railway Union was not the first industrial union in America. Both the United Mineworkers of America and the United Brewery Workers used the industrial form of organization from the mid-19th centruty onward. Rich Klimmer141.156.180.149 09:52, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
